Koh Phangan Tourism Promotion Association Chairman Chanchote Piriyasathit said that ahead of the Full Moon Party on September 14, less than half of the 5,000 hotel rooms have been booked. The situation was like years ago when violent scenes from the Deep South were released.

“Normally, all rooms are fully booked a week before the party. But as violent scenes are broadcast through international news agencies, many tourists have cancelled their plans and some delay the visit to late this year,” he said. Business operators have no means to bring the situation back to normalcy, he added, as this depends solely on the government’s decision how to end the political tension.

The Surat Thani Guide Association noted that tourists cancel their plans due to the periodic closure of airports and the continued shutdown of train services to the South.
